Radio Nova on Dublin Bus

September 1st, 2010

back in 1988 as a 2nd year apprentice I was given the strange task of replacing all of the FM radios with AM radios on the fleet of buses that were used for X type services (outer dublin non stop peak hours).

The reason behind this seemingly crazy task is that the FM radios could recieve the pirate stations and AM radios could only recieve state radio RTE. Apparently there had been complaints from some passengers that there should be non state radio on the state run Dublin city bus service.

So in Cunningham Road depot there was a stack of high end FM PLL tuner radios to be scrapped, so I made a ghetto blaster from vandalised parts taken from the buses, I remember the chasis was made from half of a burnt upstairs back seat and the radio was mounted in a cracked ‘bus stopping’ sign. Unfortunatly the radio was far too heavy to be practile when the 12v battery and built in charger were inserted, but it did make some noise with its 30 watt four speaker amp, i have memories of it playing chumbawamba at full crank in the under pass at Bayside DART station, it was some racket.

It’s kind of ironic that the state would waste such resourses making sure that the state buses would use the state radio service when today the state is hell bent on stopping Dublin bus using the state funded port tunnel in favour of for profit enterprises like Swords express.

Summer in Dublin

August 27th, 2010

The song summer in Dublin by Bagatelle has always puzzled me, the lyric

“When my humming was smothered by the 46A,
And the scream of a low flying jet”

this would fit if the 46A went out by Santry or Swords or Portmarnock where Jets fly low all the time to the annoyance of many locals, but the 46A goes out by Dun Laoghaire and if a Jet plane was flying low out that far from the airport I’d start to get worried.

If you think this Government is working, ask someone who isn’t

June 30th, 2010

this was screen grabbed from the rte.ie website

#
5,800 people added to Live Register in June
Unemployed Rate stands at 13.4% (14:01) The number of people on the Live Register for June rose to 452,882.

#
Economy emerging from recession
Irish Economy Boost from multinational profits (14:01) Figures from the CSO show that the Irish economy technically emerged from recession in the first three months of this year

If you think this Government is working, ask someone who isn’t, how can we believe this crap from the people who told us for years that the recession wasn’t going to happen!

.

and 5800 is only the “seasonally” adjusted figure, the real figure rose by 14960, I don’t think we need to seasonally adjust our government with Labour or Fine Gael we need a Revolution!

Penny Rimbaud plays Dublin

April 23rd, 2010

Penny Rimbaud is a poet, drummer, writer, former member of the performance art group EXIT and co-founder of the anarchist punk band Crass, with Steve Ignorant in 1977.

He also set up the anarchist/pacifist Dial House community in 1967 with Gee Vaucher and Phil Russell and helped to instigate the free festival movement.

An ardent, articulate and still angry polemicist, his works include Reality Asylum, Rocky Eyed and Oh America. Says Rimbaud of his own legacy: “our response to things wasn’t a musician or a lyrical response, it was a political response.”

Accompanied by haunting sax, Penny Rimbaud will read a selection of his work. Join us for an unforgettable night with a truly righteous, independent spirit.
